What Is the Purpose of the Well Child Visit?

It may be your first instinct to take your child to the doctor when their sick, but a well-child visit can prevent illness and save you the trip in the first place. Drs. Hildegard Emslander,  Lora Folz, and Jason Hagely conduct a physical examination of your child during a well-child visit, where they observe heart rate, breathing, blood pressure, height, weight, hearing, vision, musculoskeletal system, and reflexes. Depending on the age at which they enter JC Peds, your child also receives immunization updates from the first visit to age 21. We urge you to schedule your child's examination as soon as possible because it's part of the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommended preventive healthcare schedule.

What Is the Purpose of the Well Child Visit?

The goal of a well-child visit is to prevent illness, injuries, and abnormalities—which makes them the opposite of sick visits. These meetings also track your child's developmental progress, spot delays, and offer a great chance to have difficult discussions about how to respond when your child engages in antisocial behaviors, seems emotionally overwhelmed, or occasionally loses control of themselves. During well-care visits, our pediatricians thoroughly examine the patient's family history to look for patterns in genetic health conditions like diabetes, thyroid problems, or other diseases.
