Why Vaccinations Are Necessary for Children

Children are surrounded by bacteria and viruses, so it’s important to do everything you can to protect your child’s health. One of the most effective and most convenient ways to do that is to make sure your child is vaccinated. Drs. Hildegard Emslander,  Lora Folz, and Jason Hagely at JC Peds in Jefferson City, MO, provide a wide range of pediatric medical services, including vaccinations.

What You Need to Know about Vaccinations for Children

There are many reasons why vaccines are necessary for children. Consider that vaccines are:

  • Safe, because they have been rigorously tested and approved by both the FDA and CDC, before they are released for public use
  • Convenient, because they can be administered at your child’s well visit and school or sports physical appointments
  • Effective, because they boast a success rate of 90% to 99% according to healthychildren.org

Vaccines are also required for your child to attend daycare or school. You must show proof your child is current on vaccinations. Your pediatrician can provide you with the documentation you need. These are the necessary immunizations your child should have from birth through age 18, according to the CDC:

  • Hepatitis B
  • Diphtheria, Tetanus, Pertussis
  • Haemophilus influenza type B
  • Polio
  • Pneumococcal conjugate
  • Rotavirus
  • Measles, mumps, rubella
  • Chickenpox
  • Hepatitis A
  • Human papillomavirus
  • Meningococcal conjugate
  • Flu
  • COVID

It’s never too early to start vaccinations. In fact, your child will probably receive the first doses of some vaccines within the first few days of birth. Subsequent doses can be administered at newborn visits and well-child visits as your child gets older.
